Small Success Thursday: Baby Steps Edition

Welcome back to Small Success Thursday, hosted by! Take a moment, look back on your week, and give yourself a pat on the back for the things that have gone right, no matter how small they might seem.

This week feels like there has been so little for me to celebrate. I seem to have come down with a case of shingles, though without a rash, that has been causing me some pain. I’ve been on an anti-viral (I’ll have to tell a funny story about that tomorrow in Quick Takes) and a pain medication. The pain stuff didn’t seem to do much, since I hurt most of the time, but I can certainly tell as it wears off at the end of the 24-hour cycle! By the time it’s time to take it again at bedtime, I can’t stand anything touching me!

So my successes are pretty small this week.

I’ve managed to continue to meet my obligations this week; I taught Sunday school, went to co-op on Monday, and have managed to get a fair amount of homeschooling done with both girls. Not only that, but I did laundry and changed the sheets, including pulling out my electric blanket, which will come in handy as the arctic front makes it way to Virginia this weekend. I just kept plugging away at things, offering up any pain for my Nana, acting a bit like I do on long runs when I want to quit. “Just this one more thing. Okay, now I’ll fold this laundry. It’s only a few minutes. Okay, let’s wash that pot.” Small steps, baby steps.

I did go running on Saturday, though I haven’t been out since. (See notes on pain above.) Interestingly enough, I felt really good while running, and the pain from the shingles seemed to fade away a bit. Knowing that there is a good chance it’ll take 10-14 days for all the pain to subside, I commented, “Too bad I can’t just run the whole time until it’s gone!”

Oh, and running in cool weather is AWESOME! As someone who took up running in the Summer, I can’t tell you what a relief it is to run and not be dripping in sweat by the end of the run! Of course, about 7 minutes and 13 seconds after I stop moving, I’m freezing my butt off outside, so I have to be sure I can get inside shortly after my run is over!

I’m teaching a unit on Advent for our Middle School set in a couple of weeks, and I’ve decided we’re going to talk about the Jesse Tree. It’s like some kind of mission I have to spread this devotion everywhere! I’ll work on getting paper ornaments for them to use, plus see if we can print off all the readings for each family. I was trying to think about what to do instead of the usual definitions (which, really, by 6th grade should be old hat), and I realized that making ornaments while we talk about the Jesse Tree would be more fun than listening to me and discussing the questions in the teacher’s manual.

So let’s hear about your week! Join in the conversation here, or add a link at’s Small Success Thursday page!

    • Thank you! Fortunately, it isn’t so bad that I have a rash, but there is definitely pain. And I can’t complain too much, especially after my father had a case when I was in high school that his doctor dubbed “the worst case of shingles I’ve ever seen in all my life!” I feel a bit wimpy, to be honest!
